Lexington, VA -- Washinton and Lee University used two first period goals on way to a 2-0 win over visiting Randolph College in ODAC men's soccer action Tuesday night. The game concludes the conference season for both teams.
With the loss Randolph falls to 7-11 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Washington and Lee improves to 9-5-2 overall and 4-5-1 in conference play.
Tommy Pignatelli put the Generals on the board early with a goal off an assist from Timothy Bouch at the 18:26 mark of the first period. Just over seven minutes later, Fletcher McCraw would extend the Generals' lead to 2-0 on a penalty kick goal.
Although the second period was heavily played in the Generals' end, Randolph could not find a way to put one past Washington and Lee goalies Benjamin Bartlett and Alex Lambert. Randolph outshot Washington and Lee 17-11, while holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks.
WildCats goalie Aaron Humphreys made six saves in the loss. For the Generals, Bartlett had three saves before Lambert replaced him and finished with four saves.
The Wildcats earned the seventh seed in the 2008-09 ODAC men's soccer championship tournament. Randolph will travel to cross-town rival and second seeded Lynchburg College Saturday at 7:00 pm. Lynchburg defeated Randolph 2-0 early last week. It will mark the first time in school history that a men's team has qualified for the conference postseason tournament.
