Lynchburg, VA -- Behind two goals from junior Timmy Songer, Randolph College posted a 3-0 win over Bluefield College in the WildCats season opening game under the lights of the new track and field complex.
With the win Randolph improves to 1-0 while Bluefield drops to 0-2 on the young season.
Junior Eric van Staalduinen put Randolph on the board first when he found the back of the net off a cross from Justin Stephens just 5:11 into the contest. The WildCats would take a 1-0 lead into the half. From there, Songer stole the show, scoring the first of his two tallies at the 51:32 mark of the second half thanks to an assist from Eddy Ratianarivo. Randolph would put away any hopes of a Bluefield rally when first-year Nicholas Whisler and van Staalduinen combined to find Songer darting to the goal at the 82:12 mark to seal the victory.
Junior goalie Aaron Humphreys was outstanding in net for Randolph finishing with seven saves picking up the shutout. The WildCats held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks, while Bluefield outshot Randolph 14-8. A physical game from the start, the Rams were whistled for 18 fouls while Randolph recorded eight.
The WildCats will return to action Friday when they travel to play in the Goucher College Tournament. Randolph will face DeSales University at 5:00 pm.
