Lynchburg, VA -- Lynchburg College's Ryan Renfro netted two goals as the Hornets posted a 3-0 shutout win over visiting Randolph College in both teams' conference opening match on Saturday night in front of a big crowd at Shellenberger Field.
With the loss Randolph drops to 1-5-1 overall and 0-1 in ODAC play. Lynchburg improves to 5-1-1 and 1-0-1 in conference matches.
In a physical match which saw 28 total fouls, Lynchburg struck early when Josh Reed scored on a penalty kick just 10:41 into the contest. Renfro would add his first tally of the match at the 38:14 mark of the first half off an assist from Pat Brown. Renfro would then add his second goal of the match to extend the Hornets lead to 3-0 just two minutes before the halftime break.
The WildCats were unable to put one past Hornet goalie Matt Sturdivant who finished with three saves on the night. Lynchburg held a 17-9 advantage in shots and a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. There were five yellow cards and one red card handed out in a fierce cross-town rival battle.
Randolph will return to action Wednesday when they welcome Emory and Henry College to Lynchburg for an ODAC match at 6:00 p.m. at the new track and field complex.
