Lynchburg, VA -- Hollins' Colleen Thamm scored two goals, the second of which being the game-winner with just under seven minutes to play as Hollins University posted a 2-1 ODAC win over host Randolph College in women's soccer action Saturday afternoon.
With the loss Randolph sees its overall mark stand at 3-9 and drop to 0-6 in conference play. Hollins improves to 4-7-1 overall and 2-6 in ODAC matches.
Randolph first-year midfielder Samantha Wittie gave the WildCats an early 1-0 lead when she scored her third goal of the season off an assist from fellow first-year Amanda Cooper at the 13:17 mark of the first half. Just five minutes later, Thamm would tally her first goal of the contest when she broke free from the WildCats defense and beat goalie Victoria Johnson on a breakaway to tie the score at 1-1. The teams would play to a 1-1 tie at the half.
Both squads had several scoring opportunities in the first 35 minutes of the second frame, but were unable to capitalize until Randolph was whistled for a foul in their defensive end. Thamm would line up a direct kick and find the back of the net to give Hollins a 2-1 lead with 6:26 remaining in the match. Hollins would hold on to the lead through a furious Randolph rally in the final five minutes to secure the ODAC victory.
Hollins held a 22-12 shot advantage, while recording five corner kicks. The WildCats were awarded two corner kicks and whistled for seven fouls. WildCats keeper Victoria Johnson finished with seven saves, while Hollins goalie Morgan Dean finished with eight stops.
At halftime of the match, Randolph College celebrated the opening of their new field and track complex. Activities included remarks from President John E. Klein, a ribbon cutting, and a Hall of Champions chariot race around the new track.
Randolph will return to action Tuesday when they welcome Guilford College for an ODAC match scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
