Softball sweeps Sweet Briar; Improves to 6-6 in ODAC play

Randolph sits in sole possession of fifth place in the ODAC

Lynchburg, VA -- Behind the right arm of Teresa Dalton and some timely hitting, the Randolph College Softball team posted a sweep of visiting Sweet Briar College Friday afternoon in ODAC action. The WildCats took game one 5-0, then secured a 8-4 victory in game two.

With the sweep Randolph improves to 16-8 overall and 6-6 in ODAC games. The wins propel the WildCats into sole possession of fifth place. Sweet Briar falls to 3-20 overall and 0-8 in conference games.

Dalton stole the show in game one, throwing a complete game two-hit shutout, closing the door on Vixen hitters the entire contest. She added four strikeouts, facing 23 batters in the win. The WildCats jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back. Lindsay Cross continued her hot streak with the bat, going 2-3 with one RBI. Dalton helped her cause at the plate as well, going 2-4 with an RBI single in the three-run first inning. Randolph added two more insurance runs in the fourth to record the ODAC win.

Sweet Briar struck first in game two, as Sarah Maroney singled in the vixens first run of the game in the top of the first. Randolph responded with two runs in the second, as Nikki Smith smashed a deep solo home run to tie the game. Lauren Siko would later score in the inning on a Vixens' error.

The WildCats would explode for six runs in the third to blow the game open. Six hits, including a two-run double from Leigh Sexton put Randolph up for good at 8-1. Despite three runs in the fifth by Sweet Briar, Dalton retired the side in order in the seventh as the first-year pitcher secure her second victory in as many games.

Dalton went the distance in game two allowing seven hits and one earned run. She fanned six Vixen batters in the conference win. Seven WildCats had atleast one hit in the game, as Randolph pulled their conference record even heading into the last stretch of the season.

Randolph will return to action Sunday when they host fourth place Roanoke College at 1:00 p.m.
