Four WildCats errors prove costly in the loss

Salem, VA -- The Randolph College Softball team made its first appearance at the ODAC Championship Tournament in eight years at the Moyer Complex Friday afternoon falling 4-1 against third seeded Guilford College.
With the loss Randolph will continue their play in the tournament with a game against Eastern Mennonite University at 5:45 p.m. at the Moyer Complex. If Randolph prevails, they will play Saturday at 11:00 a.m. against a team to be determined.
The Wildcats struck early in the first taking a 1-0 lead on four hits including an RBI single from Nikki Smith. From there first-year pitcher Teresa Dalton would keep the Quakers at bay not allowing a hit through four innings. Guilford would rally in the fifth with two runs on two hits and two costly errors by Randolph to take a 2-1 lead. Two more hits and two more errors in the sixth would add to the Quakers lead at 4-1. Quakers pitcher Jessica Burcham would retire the side swinging in the WildCats last at bats to seal the win.
Dalton was impressive in her first-ever playoff outing going six innings allowing six hits and one earned run striking out four batters. Sarah Montgomery led Randolph with two hits, while Lindsay Cross, Brittany Irvine and Smith accounted for Randolph's other base hits.
Burcham was excellent in the circle for Guilford going seven innings allowing five hits and one earned run striking out 10 WildCat hitters. Kelly Guarnieri led Guilford offensively with two hits.
